Ararat Rural City is a wonderful place to live with a vibrant sense of community.  The visual landscape is characterised by wide horizons, spectacular mountain vistas and numerous areas of remnant vegetation.  Residents and visitors alike treasure our magnificent natural environments from the peaks and valleys of the majestic Grampians ranges to the peaceful stillness of its inland lakes, wetlands and waterways. It is our collective responsibility to ensure our unique natural heritage survives for future generations to enjoy.

Council has an important role to play in striking a balance between the current and future needs of our community and those of our natural environment.  A sensitive and responsible approach to development is required to ensure we meet our existing needs and cater for expected larger populations in the future while fulfilling our obligation to maintain a clean, healthy environment and adapt to climate change.

Ararat Rural City Council has developed an Environmental Sustainability Strategy, which integrates previous strategies, such as our Greenhouse Action Plan, Sustainable Water Use Plan and Sustainable Lighting Plan and provides a vision for how we might address the challenges that Climate Change poses.  The four major themes of the strategy are “Responding to the Issues of Climate Change”, “Enhancing and Restoring Natural Assets”, “Using our Resources Wisely” and “Ararat Council Leading by Example”.

Council is looking to partner with our communities to ensure our region responds and adapts to the impacts of Climate Change.  Council is leading the way by encouraging renewable energy developments, developing innovative ways to use waste to produce energy and engaging communities to transition to a low carbon/Peak Oil economy.  We will promote the opportunities which will be created and embrace a new age of green economics and truly sustainable development.

Council seeks to make the Ararat municipality economically, socially and environmentally sustainable.  Our wonderful rural environments are complemented by a wide range of shops and restaurants, excellent schools, hospitals and the amenities that support a comfortable lifestyle.  Wine production, agriculture and tourism are among the economic mainstays in our region with retail and manufacturing industries supporting a growing economy.
