The Ararat Rural City Maternal and Child Health program provides a free service for families with infants and children aged from birth to four years across the municipality. The service promotes the health and wellbeing of families through support, information and health promotion, as well as early identification and intervention for health concerns. The centres are staffed by Division One Registered nurses, who are also midwives with a diploma or degree in maternal and child health nursing.

The maternal & child health nurses conduct assessments at key stages in line with the key ages & stages framework of the Department of Education & Early Childhood guidelines at : 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years & 3.5 years.
